Afghanistan 1979: The War That Changed the World In 1979, when Soviet troops entered Afghanistan, they said it was only a 'limited contingent' of armed forces. Little did they know that the war would last ten years, and play a key role in the collapse of the Soviet Union (not to mention launch Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda).
