Inside The Worlds Toughest Prisons: Series 1 Crime journalist Paul Connolly goes behind the bars of some of the world’s most notorious and toughest prisons. Immersing himself in maximum security facilities around the world to live as a prisoner, he encounters the inmates locked up for their crimes and meets the men and women on the right side of law tasked with keeping the criminals behind bars. Originally broadcast on UK Ch5
[edit] Honduras
Journalist Paul Connolly experiences life as an inmate in some of the world's most notorious prisons. Paul heads to Honduras, the murder capital of the world, to spend a week living as a prisoner inside one of the most dangerous prisons - Danli Prison.
[edit] Philippines
Paul Connolly experiences life as an inmate in the impoverished Philippines jail system, where many prisons are overcrowded, severely under-funded and run by gangs. Two thirds of the country's prisoners have yet to face trial - they are arrested, charged and then left to languish on remand, with many spending years in legal limbo thanks to the archaic judicial system. During his time behind bars Paul shares a cell with a convicted murder and a rapist, meets a cop killer whose past catches up with him and sees first-hand how a ruthless gang rules one prison with almost military control.
[edit] Poland
In this episode Paul Connolly is serving time with some of Poland's most dangerous criminals in Piotrkow, a maximum security facility where isolation, strict discipline and zero tolerance keep prisoners locked up for 23 hours a day. Paul learns first-hand about the punishment room where violent inmates are subdued, is subject to an intimate body search, watches as the guards search for contraband, and discovers why inmates are forced to eat meals in their cells.
[edit] Mexico
Paul Connolly is in Mexico, where he enters El Hongo maximum-security prison, a concrete fortress of discipline and punishment from which no one has ever escaped. It was designed to hold more than a thousand inmates, and during Paul's stay he spends one of the most nervous nights of his life banged up in a cell with 37 convicts, including drug traffickers and kidnappers. He is also given rare access to Echo Block - a forbidding top-security jail-within-a-jail designed to contain drug cartel bosses and hit-men.
