D-Day in HD from HISTORY recounts one of the most critical military operations of World War II with the words of those who lived it. In the spirit of WORLD WAR II IN HD and VIETNAM IN HD, this 2-part special event features the most critical military operation of the war. For the first time, viewers can see the largest amphibious assault in history entirely in newly transferred color HD: 5,000 Allied ships landing over 160,000 soldiers across a 50-mile stretch of Normandy beaches. For the 70th Anniversary of the Allied invasion of Nazi-held Europe, HISTORY tells the story of D-Day in HD. Through stories from Allied and German survivors, the long held belief that an Allied victory was secured after a single, bloody day will be dispelled. And the final death toll far exceeds anything seen on the beaches. D-Day remains one of the most important turning points of WWII, yet very few of us know the real story until now. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France's Normandy region. For the 70th Anniversary of the Allied invasion of Nazi-held Europe, this two-part eries tells the story of D-Day in HD. Rare footage is rendered in High Definition, then combined with interviews from the men who lived through it. D-DAY IN HD presents this world-changing week through the personal accounts of soldiers on both sides, focusing on three specific units: the American 1st Division at Omaha Beach, the American 507th Paratroopers, and the German 352nd Division. Allied and German survivors give their first-hand stories on the war that changed the course of the world. In honor of the 70th anniversary, D-Day in HD compiles rare and newly uncovered footage from around the world. Using this footage as a backdrop, some of the last remaining survivors tell how Allied troops invaded Normandy to turn the tide of tyranny in one of the deadliest battles of World War II. Produced and Directed by Sharon Petzold and Owen Palmquist ; A Lone Wolf Media Production For HISTORY/A&E Television Networks, LLC.
[edit] Part 1
Part one covers the paratrooper landing behind enemy lines, failed air and artillery support efforts, the coastal approach, and the struggle to capture Omaha Beach, where thousands of U.S. infantrymen were mowed down before even reaching dry land.
[edit] Part 2
Part two covers the slow battle inland towards the strategic city of Saint-Lo. The Allied operation was compromised by breaches in intelligence, leadership issues, and a major storm that destroyed supply ships and infrastructure on the Normandy coastline. German commanders anticipated American and British attacks with seasoned defense units and the Waffen-SS. Hedgerow fighting claimed more casualties than the initial landing at Omaha Beach. Finally, reinforcements and ingenuity enabled the Allies to achieve their objective.
