THE THEMES OF SHAKESPEARE

This series features leading Shakespearian authorities tackling some of the most commonly posed questions surrounding the works of Shakespeare. Also featured are extracts from the award-winning feature films of "Macbeth" and King Lear", along with specially commissioned films of the major plays, featuring distinguished members of the Stratford.

In this program, featuring extracts from the new feature film, themes and important issues are examined. Topics include: whether "Macbeth" is a work of substance; witchcraft and Shakespeare's audiences; the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth; Banquo as a counterpart; and the capacity for goodness in Macbeth.

This program, including extracts performed by the Stratford Shakespeare Company addresses these themes: is this a history or tragedy play; the following main themes of the play; Brutus as a noble man; is he self-delusional; the motivations of Gaius Cassius; rhetorical speeches and others.

This program, including specially filmed extracts performed by the Stratford Shakespeare Company addresses the following themes: the main themes of "Hamlet"; what prevents Hamlet from revenge; does Oedipal's jealousy effect Hamlet's description of his mother's second marriage and other themes.

This program, including extracts performed by the Stratford Shakespeare Company, addresses the following themes: why is this play so popular; is the balcony scene the core of the play; the lover's extreme youth; effect of the murder of Mercutio; is the nurse a comedic role and other themes.

This program, including extracts performed by the Stratford Shakespeare Company, addresses the following themes: what are the main themes; is Othello ruled by emotion or logic; what motivates Lago; is Lago purely evil; how does Desdemona contribute to her own downfall and other themes.

This program, containing extracts from the new feature film, addresses these themes: why is King Lear such a universal tragedy; the importance of the sub-plot; how do the characters counterbalance good and evil; the functions of Poor Tom and the Fool; Lear's greatest flaw as a man and others.
